Labor Day is a federal holiday celebrated on the first Monday of September in the United States. It was created by the labor movement and honors the contributions and achievements of American Workers. The holiday was first celebrated in New York City in 1882 but Oregon was the first state of the US to make it an official public holiday. It also marks the unofficial end of Summer. Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a federal holiday that we observe on the last Monday in May to honor the brave men and women of the US Armed Forces who died while serving our country. Decoration Day was established after the Civil War as a time to decorate the graves of the fallen Union soldiers with flowers. It officially became a Federal Holiday in 1971.
