On December 25th of every year, billions of people around the globe celebrate Christmas Day as the anniversary of the birth of Jesus Christ. The actual date and month of Christ’s birth is unknown, but the first time on record that it was celebrated on December 25th was during the Christian Roman Emperor Constantine’s rule in the 300s. Around 350 AD, Pope Julius I officially set the date as Jesus’ birth. Although Christmas has a deep sacred and spiritual meaning, it is also celebrated secularly. Popular traditions include exchanging gifts, decorating Christmas trees, singing carols, attending church, having meals with family and friends, and awaiting the arrival of Santa Claus. Christmas Day has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1870.

New Year’s Day is the official first day of the year according to the Gregorian calendar, which is today’s internationally accepted calendar. The Gregorian calendar was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582 to align the previously used Julian calendar with the solar year. Although it was introduced in the late 1500s, it was not adopted until almost 200 years later in Great Britain and the Americas. Other countries did not switch to the Gregorian calendar until much later, such as Japan (in 1873) and the Republic of China (in 1912). Common traditions for celebrating the New Year include New Year’s Eve parties, fireworks, kissing your loved ones at midnight, champagne toasts, making resolutions and eating foods to bring good luck and prosperity in the coming year.
