Email Scam Targeting Businesses

We want to bring to your attention a new intelligent email scam that has recently affected a company right here in Austin. Hackers will send a fake but legitimate-looking wire transfer email – usually to employees that have access to company finances – from a CEO or senior executive asking to wire money to a specified account. In this case, the CEO was out of the country – which the hackers were aware of by following the company’s social media pages – and knew which employee to send the email to, based on their website. Although spam filters were in place, the email was able to get through.

Is YOUR company safe? Now is a good time to reexamine your internal financial controls for payment authorizations to avoid falling victim to these fraudulent emails.
